Current Footpath Trading Management Standards

 

Below are some of the standards which often get challenged by all users of the street.  These have been outlined to prompt your thoughts for giving feedback.

 

Footpath Management Standards

  • No furniture along the building line of any premises to ensure a clear and accessible path of travel for all pedestrians.
  • Minimum pedestrian access of not less than 1.5m
  • Hours of operation  - 11pm for hotels & bars and 1am for restaurants & cafes
  • All furniture to be removed off the footpath at the close of business
  • Screens and awnings shall not enclose the footpath or affect the openness of the street.
  • No pull-down blinds from awnings to screens or ground.
  • Windproof ashtrays must be available for patrons at all times.

Footpath Trading Zones

  • The footpath is divided into three zones.  Pedestrian, Trading and Kerb zone. 
  • Pedestrian zone is an unobstructed pedestrian footpath not less than 1.5m in width along the building
  • The trading zone is the space remaining between the pedestrian zone and kerb zone.  This zone varies in width from street to street depending on the overall width of the footpath
  • There must be a minimum gap of 1.0m between each trading zone along the street (to allow access to the road and associated car parking spaces)
  • The kerb zone is the area between the gutter and trading zone.  It must accommodate adjacent parking, loading and associated street activity (bus & tram stops etc).  The width of this zone ranges between 0.7m to 1.5m.
  • Standard setbacks apply from existing street furniture or infrastructure.  These range from between 0.5m to 1.0m and must be adhered to.

Footpath Dining

  • Tables and chairs must, at all times, be located within the designated trading zone
  • Standard amounts of furniture apply depending on the area available.
    • 2 person table – 2m2
    • 3 person table – 3m2
    • 4 person table – 4m2

Furniture Standards

  • Maximum height for screens is 0.9m
  • Glass screens are permitted in shopping precincts where footpaths are 6.0m or wider
  • Maximum height for glass screens 1.5m.
  • Advertising boards must not exceed 1.0m in height or 0.7m in width
  • No standard height for display of goods currently exists
  • Planters must be no higher than 1.0 and no longer than 1.8m
