About the Speakers
 
 Clive Geddes, Mayor of Queenstown Lakes District
Elected Mayor of the Queenstown Lakes District Council in 2001 despite no previous experience of local government.
 
Elected unopposed in 2003 and returned against other candidates for a third term in 2007.
 
Born in Waimate Canterbury in 1945 and educated in Christchurch. Graduated with an economics and management degree from the University of Canterbury in 1969 and following professional work experience overseas returned to settle in Queenstown in 1975.
 
Since that time has been involved in the Queenstown and New Zealand real estate development, tourist services, construction and hospitality industries, developing and managing a number of tourism related companies.
 
Moved in the early 1990’s to national and  international asset management with an emphasis on commercial properties and hotels in Queenstown and the United States.
 
Past ex Mayoral roles include; joint founder of the Queenstown marketing agency Destination Queenstown, joint founder of the Queenstown Winter Festival, board member of the National Travel Association, contest director for Glide New Zealand,
 
Current ex Mayoral roles include; Chair of the Otago Provinces regional economic development agency, Otago Forward; member of the Rugby World Cup 2011 southern region bid team, Local Government New Zealand’s representative on the Minister of Tourisms Ministerial Advisory Group, member of the Regional Transport Committee, ex officio board member of Destination Queenstown.
 
Personal interests are outdoor based being an active fly fisher, hiker and glider pilot.

Chris Buckingham, Chief Executive, Destination Melbourne
 

Chris leads Destination Melbourne, the regional tourism organisation for Greater Melbourne. Until recently, Chris played a pivotal role in the development of the Gippsland Tourism Sector.
 
He is passionate about the tourism industry and optimistic about the future of Melbourne and Victoria as an outstanding global visitor destination.
 
Chris is a Certified Practising Marketer through the Australian Marketing Institute and a Graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
 
Chris lives in Moe with his family. His latest obsession is surfing, which does not occupy enough of his time.
