Innovative Leadership

A particular feature of the Port Phillip economy is its ability to be creative and innovative. This is particularly evident in the growth and development of small to medium businesses.

Clearly the development of information communication technology has enabled large organisations to outsource much of what traditionally they would do themselves. Combined with the availability of an educated and skilled workforce, that can take advantage of this trend, Port Phillip affords a competitive advantage. Characteristically those sectors that belong to this group are business and professional specialists plus managers of varying kinds (knowledge based businesses).

Successful economies are a delicate balance of skills, opportunities, environment and culture.

A vital part of Port Phillip's success is the integration of these elements, especially the cultural aspect. It is this and the rich variety of people involved in cafes, restaurants and shops that provides identity and a sense of place.

Whilst the knowledge-based businesses are highly successful, they still require the services of these relatively low skilled, low knowledge based facilities. The latter may not contribute significantly in income terms to the local economy, however they are crucial in ensuring that those business sectors that do, are satisfied and content with the environment in which they operate.

Low skilled and low knowledge based sectors are also important in providing employment opportunities that suit differing life styles, part time work that accommodates family commitments, young people and those returning to the world of work.

All businesses within the community have a role to play in ensuring the ongoing success of the Port Phillip economy.
