Population

The City of Port Phillip has more than 78,000 residents. Population growth has increased at an annual average rate of 1.14 percent over the last decade which is greater than neighbouring inner city municipalities, although significantly less than the City of Melbourne.

A significant proportion of the population is in the age bracket or 25 to 39 years (reproductive age) with the medium age being 34 years.

Importantly, net migration of residents from other areas to Port Phillip is expected to remain high. Hence, it is expected that the population will be around 93,000 by 2021 based on an annual growth rate of 1.77 percent.

Port Phillip's high growth rate is evidence of the city's popularity and an indication that managing growth is likely to be an important feature of any economic development strategy and subsequent program of activity.

NOTE: In this report Inner City is defined to include the municipalities of Yarra, Stonnington and Port Phillip. Melbourne (SD) is defined to include the wider metropolitan area.
